We were thrilled to try the newest hand roll bar in London, Ukiyo, located in Covent Garden (8 Slingsby Place, WC2E 9AB). Nestled in a quiet pedestrian area, the restaurant offers an intimate yet welcoming ambiance. The setup features a bar surrounding the chefs, where you can watch them craft sushi right before your eyes. The chefs personally hand you each roll as soon as it’s ready, adding a special touch to the experience.
For the evening, we wore our Luna ring in red, knowing we’d admire it every time the chef handed us a roll.
You can choose between an à la carte menu or set menus, featuring hand rolls or a combination of hand rolls and maki rolls. For those with a bigger appetite, an extended tasting menu is also available—it looked incredible as we watched our neighbors enjoy it.
We opted for Set Menu 2, which includes four hand rolls, each one better than the last. The fish was exceptionally fresh—something we hadn’t experienced in a new restaurant in quite some time. Ukiyo has definitely earned a spot on our list of favorite Japanese restaurants in London.
We also tried the Ukiyo Special maki roll, which changes daily based on the catch of the day, and it was phenomenal.
If you’re a fan of raw fish and traditional sushi, this spot is an absolute must-visit!
